Year of Learning

Hey Folks,

Today I wanted to talk more about knowledge. This year I wanted to have a year of learning. What I mean by a year of learning is I wanted to learn new things, fun things, exciting things, maybe things that would advance my career. Primarily I wanted to push my mind to a new limit. I mean if I always push my body, why not my mind?

This all stemmed from my finding that I struggle if I don’t learn new things. I get down on myself, I get grumpy, bored, depressed, and just not that fun of a human being to be around for long or short durations. If I am truly honest, I was getting pretty bummed with work and wanted to start teaching myself some new hobbies that would take my mind off of my 8-5 job. So I signed up for an online course in Web Development. Holy Zeus! Within a week I found myself feeling great! I was being rechallenged, pushing my mind to a new mentality of thinking. Then it dawns on me that I forgot something so simple. The brain is a muscle! Just like any workout in the gym, you are going to need to push the muscles to the next limit to see any results. If you keep going in with the same weight, same reps, and same sets, you are going to get bored. You will not see much growth in your muscle, and you are going to lose motivation.

So, this year I decided to push the ol’ head brain just as much as my body and possibly more. I started with Web Development and am currently still in this course (it is a pretty hefty course.) I then decided it is time to learn a new language. Sto imparando l’italiano. Getting pretty good, right? But I didn’t want to stop there. I wanted to keep learning. However, I started to get a little overwhelmed, and, well, I needed to pace myself. Just like overtraining in the gym, it is possible to do it with knowledge as well. High school and college students do it all the time. So I created a regimen and schedule for my thirst for knowledge. I know, I know, typical Ravenclaw. Let me tell you though, it works! I have dedicated certain days to specific sets of expertise. A couple of days a week I use it towards web development. I then use some of the other days to continue my knowledge in health and fitness. As for learning Italian, I complete a small ten-minute session each day (or at least I try to). At the end of the day, I feel more satisfied and accomplished. This then, in turn, leads to being more motivated every day for workouts, adventures, and overall just in a better mood. As I continue to push my brain to the limits, I will post here. I want to keep you folks posted on my progress, my new findings, as well as anything I can pass on to you gorgeous creatures!

For now, I recommend learning something new. Challenge yourself and expand your mind. There is a whole universe filled with knowledge, might as well not let it go to waste.

Until next time,
